Best town for lodging Arrive Avignon on September 18 and doing road trip thru Provence.

We will have seven days to travel by car through Provence and will depart for home on September 25 out of Marseilles.. Like to stay in small AirBnB's or boutique hotels, Would like suggestions on fairly central location to make home base any suggestions for lodging, charming town, or generally helpful information. Any sight seeing or eating suggestions also appreciated.

We were in Aix 20 years ago and loved it. Sounds like it has gotten much bigger though and more and more crowded. Would like to revisit St.Remy.

Many thanks!

My wife and I spent two weeks in Provence last month, starting in Aix and finishing with a week in St-Remy. We loved both, but St-Remy was better located for more of the sights we wanted to visit by car- Les Baux, Avignon, Arles, Isle-sur-La-Sorgue, and more. It’s a charming little town, with plenty of restaurants and shops all within walking distance. We stayed at a very nice AirBnB just on the edge of the core, with private parking and easy access to get on the road to all the other places. Edit: If you are arriving in Avignon by TGV, there’s about a thousand rental cars right across the road from the (out of town) Avignon Gare TGV, from every rental company you can think of. From there, it’s about a 25 minute drive to Saint-Remy.

Might I suggest that you consider

They have a lovely two-bedroom farmhouse as part of their B&B property, as well as other individual rooms. We rented the farmhouse for six nights and every day we headed out in a different direction. So much to see in Provence and loved every minute of it, and our stay. The owners are Raphael and Jordane Marsot and they are wonderful hosts. They have a nice vineyard and they brought us fruits and veggies from the property while we were there. We are going back to France in the spring and staying with them for part of the trip. You can contact them on their Facebook page above or search for Jordane, who has a separate personal FB page as well. Hope this is helpful. If you do stay there, tell them Jim from Louisiana said hello.

Thank you for suggestions. We checked out one and it was booked. The one in St. Remy was a little above our budget. We want something with charm and privacy but will be using it mainly as a base for day trips. Could be smaller as long as we have Queen bed.

Was in Provence for the month of March 2024 and loved it. Aix for a week, Arles for a week, Avignon for 2. Public transpo only. I decided on the amount of time in these towns as I highlighted all the places I wanted to visit on a map and it turned out Avignon was the best option for about a dozen of them, so 2 weeks in Avignon as that is where I could get to and from the places I wanted. Took the bus 99.9% of the time and maybe 1 train trip. I always stay in apts and use booking.com.

We stayed at Le Ferme de la Huppe just outside
of Gordes. Fabulous place to stay. It is a restored 18th century farm with stone walls, beamed ceilings. Great location to explore the villages of the Luberon Valley, all less than 10-15 km away. They have a well known bistro on site where we had one of our best dinners. Highly recommend it! Wish we could go back!

I was happy with Arles as my base for Provence. It's central enough to visit the area as day trips, with a rental car, and has a good number of sights in town. I stayed in a nice apartment next door to the "Yellow Cafe" Van Gogh painted.

Thanks
