Best route from Paris to Italian Riviera please

Hello-

My daughter and I will be traveling to Paris in 3 weeks and want to go from there to Italian Riviera, then planning to drive as far as we can on the Italian/French riviera toward Barcelona. Train would be ideal. Are there convenient stations near the Italian coast?

Thank You-
Lynn

You do realise that the Italian Riviera is southeast of Paris and Barcelona is southwest of Paris, the entire width of France away?

I am confused. You say you want to drive but ask about stations and train.

There are roads that can do that trip. There are trains that can do that trip, and along both the French and Italian Rivieras there are stations every few miles/km.

There are fewer stations along the coast towards Spain.

Could you clarify a little please?

I agree with Nigel, more information would really be helpful. Where exactly in the "Italian Riviera" are you planning to visit? How long will this trip be?

Travel from Paris to Liguria to Barcelona is a considerable distance, and not something I'd want to drive. There are also some potentially expensive "caveats" to be aware of when driving, so using high speed trains (when possible) would be a much more efficient travel method.

As you're leaving in 3 weeks, that doesn't allow much time to work out the details.

You might want to delete your duplicate post so that you can keep all replies in the same place.

Lynn,

I'm confused by your post.

Where do you want to travel to on the "Italian Riviera"?

It would be helpful to know this information before we can answer your questions regarding train stations & such.

I hope you realize that you may have a difficult time finding accommodations in such a short time frame.

It sounds like you will be doing a lot of backtracking by traveling to the Italian Riviera (from Paris), back to France, & then traveling toward Barcelona (?)

Where are you flying home from?
Paris or Barcelona?

If you take trains from Nice to one of the Cinque Terre towns, for example, then the easiest onward connection would be to fly from Pisa to Barcelona. See www.skyscanner.com. If you actually want to drive across the south of France, then I would hope that you allow at least a week for stops along the way. By train, it's a relatively long, expensive ride.

The best ways to see whether a town is served by train include:

  • Look up a train schedule through the DB link at How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online, being careful of spelling and using a current date.
  • Guidebooks covering the area will have rail maps and describe transport options.
  • Google Maps shows train lines and stations, if you zoom in closely enough.
  • Rail-only maps are also online.

My understanding is you want to train from Paris to the 'Italian Riviera', and then pick up a car to drive all the way along the Med thru France to Barcelona.

To avoid excess fees I would recommend only driving from Nice to Montpellier.

Perhaps fly from Paris to Pisa
Train to Nice
Drive to Montpellier
Train to Barcelona
