Best route - Annecy to Provence, near L'isle sur le Sorgue

We (retired couple) are trying to decide which would be the most interesting route to drive in mid-September. Before staying one night in Annecy, we have reserved four nights in Lauterbrunnen.

First option: Annecy to Chamonix (intrigued by Step into the Void) then overnight near Briancon. Next day, stop at Vaison la Romaine before heading to St. Didier for four nights.

Second option: Annecy to Vallon-Pont d'Arc, stopping at some of the "most beautiful villages" along the way. Next day, visit Chauvet Cave replica, drive Ardeche Gorge , maybe Orange Roman Theatre if time permits, before heading to St, Didier for four nights.

Any hotel recommendations for either Briancon or Vallon Pont d.Arc.?

Thanks for any help.

Is the road from Chamonix to Briancon a "white knuckle" type road or does it feel pretty safe, even for those of us who won't go near edges with precipitous drops? Despite searching forums and reading numerous travel guides, I am not finding much information about driving through the French Alps or visiting Briancon. Any help would be appreciated.
