We'll be spending part of our 25th anniversary in Bayeaux and Amboise at the end of March. Any recommendations on the best restaurants in each of those cities?
My wife and I had a wonderful dinner at La Rapière in Bayeaux several years ago while staying at the Hotel Churchill. I'd recommend it highly.
One of the best meals we had during our 4 week march through Europe last fall was at Le Patio in Amboise. Delicieux!
I highly recommend Chez Bruno in Amboise. My husband and I had dinner there last April and the food was amazing with great prices.
Our D day tour guide recommended LeMoulin de la Galette in Bayeux. The entrance is a bit hidden and looks small but when you enter and go to the back there’s a huge patio next to the river. We had one of our best meals there. There was also a patisserie named Karls where we picked up quiches and macarons for a picnic lunch. They wrap the quiches up so prettily!
I also second La Rapière in Bayeux. One of the best meals in 6 trips to France.
Another for La Rapiere. Had something called the fisherman’s pot. Best meal of my whole trip. Also If you like creme brûlée, try Le Pommier. Peanut butter and coffee flavors. Great stuff.
Bayeux:
- L'Assiette Normande: probably our favorite during a 6-night stay. On the corner opposite the cathedral.
- Le Moulin De La Galette: enjoyed a nice lunch on a chilly day; nice views of the river.
- Hôtel Reine Mathilde: on a warm night we enjoyed an excellent meal outside on their plaza; near the river.
We didn't get to La Rapière; probably a mistake!
Sorry, I never remember restaurant names (I remember what they look like). The best place I found for restaurants in Amboise was on a street that runs below the wall of the chateau. I think it's Place Michel Debre. There were a line of places there to choose from. There's more restaurants in and around the shopping area closer to the river, but I thought these were better and had reasonable prices with outdoor dining looking up at the chateau.
I ate in Bayeaux but nothing stood out. There are a lot of quaint choices throughout the small center. I can't remember why I chose the ones I did?
Hi Greg
We run a B+B close to Bayeux so it's important for us to send guests to the best places around Bayeux so have tried almost all the restaurants in the Area.
.Because it is a very touristic place you can find places some good and lots bad.
When we eat around Bayeux we always judge a place on how friendly they are. It's no good having good food with a bad and un-friendly service.
By far the Best for good food and good friendly service "La Rapiere''.We have never had a bad meal and our guest have alway come back very happy.
If I take my wife out for a good evening that's were we will go.....but book early. If you try to book a few days in advance you will have no look.
For a more of a Brasserie ''La Garde Manger is nice with a big tarrace. We eat there several time a month for a simple Lunch when shopping and always watch to see how they treat their customer. We have sent a few guest there and had one or two bad reports.Because they have a all day service it is a great place to eat early before the evening rush. But not really for a big event like an anniversary dinner.
There are one or two I would not recommend.Le Tavern du duc's.Because I am british they thought I was a tourist on one occasion and gave me tourist portion while the table of French on the next table had the same meal but much larger plates. They also treated us quite bad.We could hear them in French complaining about customer and it was not nice. The food was good though.
Another bad one is Le Table de Terroir. In my experience when they have a busy service treat their customer very bad.I will not even tell you our experience but did put it on Trip advisor because we were treated so bad, just do not go there. If you want any more suggestion inbox me and I would be happy to help as there are plenty of other good ones but my post is getting a little long :-)
We are always interested what places to advice so please let us know what experience you had.
Have a great trip.
Michael
Since the are few recommendations for Amboise, let me suggest L'Epicerie below the chateau walls, Le Lion d'Or along the river, or for a splurge in the countryside, Chateau de Pray.
We ate twice at Le Domesday (just behind the cathedral) and enjoyed the galettes and cidre. Good for a relaxed, informal evening...not necessarily an anniversary meal. L'Assiette Normande was also a nice choice -- they serve the local Lecornu cidre :) La Galette de Moulin was okay but I'd choose it for the ambiance, not necessarily the food quality.
Have a great time! Bayeux is a beautiful town!
In Amboise we ate in La Fourchette, very good and small, you must have reservations and the Souper Starter was to die for and the main dishes were excellent.
