Best place to stay Mont St Michel
We stayed at auberge saint pierre. Is it the best? Define best. But we liked staying in the town. When the tourists clear out after 6 pm, you have the place almost to yourself. Also it’s convenient to make the 7am service at the abbey. Only a handfull of people there to watch/pray with the monks and nuns.
I've also stayed at Auberge Saint-Pierre and enjoyed it. I believe either one or a couple of families own all the hotels/restaurants on the Mont and I wouldn't describe any of them as luxurious but sufficient for my needs. I like that the Auberge has a back door that opens direct onto the ramparts and they offered a copious buffet breakfast. I enjoyed my room looking over the bay but I've heard "some folks" say they don't like the rooms overlooking the street in any hotel because they heard noise from the trash pick-up trucks in the early morning. All the info you need is on the MSM website:

I've also stayed at the hotels at the end of the causeway on the mainland and though cheaper than hotels on the Mont you can not just walk outside of your hotel room at anytime and actually BE on the Mont, which is especially magical to stroll around when lit up at night and you can stroll the empty streets/alleys after the tourists have gone. You also need to take the navette from the mainland hotels to get to the Mont. Some folks say they prefer the causeway hotels because the Mont is best viewed from a distance and to that I say that all you have to do to see the Mont from a distance if staying on the Mont itself is walk a couple hundred meters down the causeway.
Keep in mind that all but one property (and most restaurants and a few museums) on Mont-Saint-Michel are owned by the same organization. The Mère Poulard Group. You will see the Poulard name a lot, but many places not named after them are owned by them as well. They basically have a monopoly, so prices and service reflect the fact that there is no competition. That being said, it is truly magical to stay on the Mont itself. I suspect most people who say it is "just as nice" off island have never really stayed on the island.
