Best Paris neighborhood with baby?

We are going to attempt a long-term 1-2 month trip to Paris when our baby is approx. 4-6 months old (this is flexible as we haven't made any deposits yet). We've done long trips before but not with a baby! Our tentative plan is 4 weeks somewhere in Southern Spain then Paris for 4 more weeks.

Would like opinions on the best neighborhoods to focus on when looking for an apartment- my husband is on odd hours due to his telecommute obligations so we are mainly focused on doing things during the morning/afternoon- museums, long walks, scenic parks (although it will be late winter/early Spring), amazing food for breakfast and lunch, cafes, maybe some shopping, etc. mostly just looking for ambiance and a cultural experience. We don't want an area that's only busy at night or gets jam-packed with tourists/clubbers or anything like that, but we don't want it to be super quiet. Won't have a car except maybe for a weekend excursion or two so would like to be within reasonable range (walking or bus, etc) of tourist attractions people like to visit while in Paris area.

I usually research a ton about different neighborhoods in previous cities we've been too but I won't have time this go around, so I am hoping for some good advice here! TIA!

With no kids I'm taking a chance on this, but the Luxembourg Gardens hit my mind reading your post. Nice big park full of kids, close to many sights, good Metro links. A place near the west side of the park is likely to be quieter than east where the Latin Quarter is. Try the southern and western parts of the 6th arrondissement.

Another great park is the Parc Monceau at the north end of the 8th, adjoining the 17th. Maybe not as convenient to sights but nice neighborhoods.

Cafes, ambience, great food? Pretty much anywhere! Hopefully you'll hear from people with actual experience escorting infants.

I second the 6th near Luxembourg Gardens .. and the 14th which borders it.

I also suggest you take buses instead of metro with baby if alone since you can wheel the baby buggy right on , buses have an area in the middle just for strollers and buggies, plus no long staircases to worry about.

Never mind cars.. total hassle. I have relatives who live in Paris and keep their car in deep storage and only take it out in the summer when they leave the city and travel south to the country for a couple months. They use metro, buses and taxis in city and have their entire lives( now in their 80s they take more taxis and have stopped using metro, too many stairs and long passages)

Paris is a lovely safe city .. I do hope you don't plan on staying in while hubby works all the time.. go off on your own.. yes even in the evenings,. its not like a big North American city ..

I think that you can stay in just about any neighborhood in Paris. If your child were older, I would say that he or she would love the Luxembourg Gardens but at 4 to 6 months, it's not a big issue. It is a lovely park and in a great part of the city to base yourself but you will find all the items on your wish list in just about any part of central Paris. Much of this depends on the budget but for a month, I would also look at slightly less touristy areas in the 11th arrondissement and you may like parts of Montmartre.

Montmartre with a 6 month old in a stroller?! All those hills and stairs would be awful. I realize that parents with babies live there, but it would not be good for most visiting parents. Plus you'd be farther from a lot of sites, and would need to take the Metro to the rest of the city.

I wouldn't worry about being close to a park, unless it's for your own sake. There are many small parks scattered all over. You'll be able to walk a while, stop to feed the baby, walk some more.

It doesn't much matter as a baby at this age is luggage; it isn't as if s/he will be playing on the playgrounds at the Luxembourg Gardens or whatever. Pick a place that works for you and preferably a small apartment with at least two rooms so you can put the baby to bed and still enjoy adult time.

I would avoid Montmartre due to the hills, but most of the rest of Paris is flat and fairly friendly to strollers. Plan on using buses if you use a stroller, or at this age get a backpack for moving around the city easily with the child. (many museums don't allow backpacks though, so having a stroller is useful) The buses have space for strollers and kneel for easy access; the metro always has stairs and is more difficult to negotiate with a baby in a stroller.

Between the popular neighborhoods where Rick recommends hotels, the Rue Cler area is quieter and has fewer late-night transport options, while the Marais and Bastille areas are known for clubbing.

I raised one baby near the 14th and Parc Montsouris was our go-to. I recommend this residential area. Although baby will be too young to play or go to the marionette theater, it's nice for you to walk in the park, push the stroller, and sit on the bench watching others.

I was going to say the same thing that Bets said, but about the Luxembourg Gardens (as Dick first recommended). Although your baby is too young to play, it's my favorite place in Paris and wonderful for strolling, sitting, people watching. It has 2 cafes and several restrooms. Staying somewhere in easy walking distance would be my choice.

Luxembourg Garden. It's quiet and the park is lovely for children or a walk with the baby. Have fun!

I am going to suggest an apartment near Mo. St. Paul (in the Marais; a short walk over to the Ile St. Louis) or Mo. La Motte Picquet-Grenelle (in the 15th; just around the corner from the Champ de Mars) simply because both have a great Monoprix (food/department store) nearby and with a 6-month-old child, that might be the most valuable convenience of all! From my experience, both neighborhoods are wonderful to explore.
