Best of Metz/Nancy area?

Hello,

My wife and I will be staying near Metz and Nancy in a couple of weeks. What are your recommendations for cultural and historical “must-sees”? Any great places to grab some food or coffee? We will have a rental car, so we can be pretty flexible.

Thank you!

The Pompidou in Paris, home to "contemporary" art, operates this branch with selections from its permanent collection and occasional special displays. It is located on the edge of Metz, near the train station but a bit of a hike from the centre of the city. The satellite location has a swooping look, in contrast to its parent which resembles an oil refinery. Both are good fun.

The highlights of Nancy are the art nouveau buildings created by the School of Nancy (Download the tourist office map here), and the Museum of the School of Nancy.

East of Nancy, if time allows, St Nicolas de Port has an interesting, massive Gothic church, and Lunéville has a lovely 18th c chateau with gardens. Not musts, but a nice diversion.

Hi,

Metz is an old historical town, the main town in Lorraine. I've spent over a week there visiting the place one time. If you want to see historical evidence, see the ramparts. The city was fought over three times, 1870, 1918, 1944. Culturally, the cathedral is worth seeing.

Great that you have a rental car if you want to see more battlefield sites, war museums and cemeteries around Metz....Gravalotte, St Privat, Mars-la-Tour. I took the bus from Metz and had to walk back 5 miles back to the next town from Gravalotte.

War cemeteries dot the edges of these villages en route to Metz. I saw them in 1984 en route to Metz.
