We are planning to visit Versailles the last week of June, probably on Thursday as recommended in Rick Steves' guidebook. I've searched on getaguide for a likely company or individual that could take us around and skip the queue. I know it's expensive but friends say it's money well spent. My granddaughter is 11 and grandson is 9. (I'm hoping they will have some sense of Louis XIV and Marie-Antoinette before we arrive, even if it's just from the movies.)
Also, we are staying in the Marais and wonder what would be the best way to get out to Versailles. Any advice very much appreciated, particularly if you've visited with kids. Merci.
Skip the queue doesn't mean you will get to skip the security line. Get your reserved time as early as possible to avoid the crush of people inside. A private guide will not make the crowds disappear. The kings apartments tour should help. Enter Versailles tips, or something like that in the search bar and filter for forum, 6 months or newer, for tips from others.
Bonne chance!
P.S. We took our kids when they were 8 and 10 and they survived the lines and crowds. They especially liked the Petit Hameau and the grounds and fountains, but all the gold and gilt did make a big impression! We talked about the king and queen and the revolution beforehand, so they were able to appreciate it more.
Hi Judy --
"Get your reserved time"--is that a reserved time from the official website, or from a tour guide?
Also, what's the best time to visit for the fountains? I've found the schedule on the official site extraordinarily confusing.

I haven't used a guide, so I am referring to getting the time from the official website. I don't know about how it works withn a guide, but definitely try to secure an early entrance through the guide, if that is how they work. Best of luck!
It's been too long for me to know the current fountain set-up. Maybe someone else will chime in.
