Best Cognac (alcohol) in France?

will not be visiting the Cognac region while in France but if I can I would like to get an excellent XO quality cognac to bring home to family who love it.

Ideally I would like to buy something that is not exported to Australia (ie something we can’t buy at home).

The closest we will get to the Cognac region is Bordeaux before we go on to Toulouse, Avignon, Lyon and Paris.

Can anyone recommend a cognac brand that fits the brief and is available to purchase outside of Cognac? Bonus points if you can point me to a cognac specialty store.

Many thanks in advance!

While I can’t give you a good recommendation. I have been given very good advice at wine shops throughout France. Just be aware of what you can get back home!

When you are in France, go to a bar and try a cognac. But then try an armagnac. I find that cognac has a flavor that I do not enjoy, possibly due to the quality of the spirits I have tried. However, armagnac is generally more agreeable and pleasant to my palate.

Well since you are buying cognac for friends who like it, I won't recommend something that isn't that. However I will agree that having a drink in a bar and asking the bartender's recommendation is an excellent idea. He or she may be much more conversant with top notch cognacs that aren't exported.

The best places to find a real Cognac (not those sold in supermarkets) are wine shops. (Caviste in french)

You will find them in all the cities you go to. They are passionate and professional who can advise you. Nowadays, and with the exception of a few high-end bars, bartenders are mainly multitasking staff who often do not have the necessary knowledge to advise you on Cognacs.

When you are in a city in France look for "caviste" on Google Maps. There will be at least one or two within walking distance.

The best place for Cognac being obviously Bordeaux which is the closest city to Cognac producers.

If you wish to purchase a French distilled liquor, you should also try Calvados, the French apple brandy. It is from Normandy. It is far superior to the US "applejack". I always purchase a bottle of Calvados in the duty-free. In 2023, I got a 1.75L bottle for about E20.
