Best City base for exploring Alsace area

We will be in Alsace area for 3 night in October 2017.
We are looking for suggestions for best town to stay at to explore area.
Our interests are wine/vineyards, Black Forest, Verdun, and historic villages and castles in area..
We will have a rental car.
