We are looking to rent an automatic car in Paris area. Which company would you recommend? Thank you
I (and many others on this site) use Autoeurope. It is a third party company that can arrange the rental. They have an excellent web site where you can compare the costs of multiple companies. I use them for a couple of reasons:
I. I have compared their prices to booking directly with the car rentals companies web site. Their prices are always better (especially when it comes to insurances.)
2 They have a 24 hour emergency line in case you need help. I have had to use it. In London I had an agent that was refusing to rent me the car at the agreed price. He said I had to take their insurance (I had my own car insurance). I called Auteurope and they handled it.
One more thing, For years I used my own insurance that I arranged before the trip. Many rental companies are refusing to accept that insurance. They will still accept your credit card insurance, but be sure you research the requirements. They can include (but not limited to) a letter from your CC Company verifying you have coverage written with in an certain amount of time before you rent.
I've had a good experience with AutoEurope too. But our most recent rental was from Sixt and both the car and the service were excellent.
I just booked a compact for 10 days (Lyon - Avignon) with their insurance, automatic transmission for $801. I started in Kayak and selected Avis. I can't speak to how good the service will be, but it is a pretty good rate from what I can see.
If you are using Auto Europe, check the AE website and ask for a quote from Gemut.com,, which issues AE vouchers. The quote I got for a van from Gemut was over $200 less than what I saw on the AE website.
The primary reason you should use Autoeurope is for their customer service, and their prices are very, very competitive. If you have any problem, and many things can go wrong, Autoeurope has a 24-hour hot line, with English-speaking operators who can offer immediate assistance no matter the problem.
