We plan 5-7 days in Alsace in May; plan to get about via train and bus--no car. Am considering Colmar as a base. Would appreciate your input. Thanks.

Yes, Colmar would be our preferred base, with plenty to see, frequent trains to Strasbourg or Mulhouse (for car museum*), and less frequent buses or minivan tours to neighboring smaller towns. Five days would be enough for most people.
*Museum is close to a station called Mulhouse Nord, but your train goes to Mulhouse Ville/Central station.

I most definitely agree with using Colmar as the base! It's a beautiful smaller town with canals, and has some excellent hotels and restaurants, as well as the impressive Unterlinden Museum.

Another vote for Colmar. Absolutely lovely place to stay -- so lovely you might not even want to do many day trips away from there. TC

We loved Colmar. Be sure to take the quick, easy train ride to Turckheim.
