Hi, all. We are visiting Paris in mid October. I know the main sights are scattered throughout a large area of the city, and that we will need to take the metro to some of them. What area of the city would you recommend for us to stay, with easy access to the metro, cafes nearby, and a safe walking environment? Mid range accommodations are fine. Thanks!
That description fits almost anywhere in Paris. Popular areas are the Marais, Latin Quarter, and St Germain des Prés.
If you would like specific hotel recommendations, please define mid-range in euros.
Steves' guide book for Paris has a number of excellent recommendations. If you don't want to buy it, check it out from your public library.
The very best? Plaza Athénée with all of the celebrities.
For commoners? Hotel Saint-Petersbourg Opera or Hotel Square Louvois
For my first visit to Paris I chose to stay near the Saint-Michel Notre Dame RER/Metro Stop. This covered the direct RER-B to & from CDG, Metro 4 North & South-ish through Paris and the RER-C to Versailles. I stayed in a hotel 2 short blocks from the line, now a days I choose an apartment between the 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th Arr. My next trip I may look to a different Arr. I look for a Metro stop w/in a few blocks of where I stay.
Enjoy your trip.
