We are flying into Paris, have the next day for Paris sites, and then some of our party needs to leave their luggage at the hotel and take the evening train from St. Lazare to Bayeaux for DDay tour, then train back the next evening, get bags and take the RER A to Disney Paris hotel. They can get the RER A at Auber or Les Halles for Disney. Which would be better: stay at hotel walking distance to St. LAzare/Auber (like Mercure Louvre), stay at hotel near Les Halles (Novotel)? If we pick Les Halles, is that an easy taxi ride from St. Lazare. how is the area around St.L to walk in the evening? We also would like to walk to the Louvre and other Paris places, Notre Dame, etc. on our touring day vs. subway, so central location is key. Alternatively, we could also stay near the Sorbonne, which is far from St. L, but is that a better location for walking around on our touring day?
There are plenty of fine hotels near Gare St. Lazare. The area directly around the station is just like any other area around a train station. Bustling with people, lots of businesses, lots of eateries, and a lot of people down on their luck. It is by no means dangerous and as a petite single woman traveling solo I had more trouble dealing with the drunk, harrassing, wannabe gigolos than any of the homeless people. There is a metro station directly in front of the train station for easy access to the rest of the city.
