Best app for understanding metro in paris & vicinity

Need name of app that you can put in start point & end point & it will tell you where to get on & off metro in paris . Where to change lines, how to go from Eiffel to any point or any metro station to another tourist site . Say rue du bac to rive gauche( versailles ) all the names of stops you get off & which stop do you get back on
etc. App that says point A start - point G change to line? Get off at point T to see xxxsite. Does this app exist??? So the app figures it out not you ??? This is for someone who has no sense of direction & when they look at a map it makes no sense. ... ( has never traveled by metro or train or bus ) help! Anyone that knows of app for iPhone or iPad that does this ?
They will have limited time in paris & will have to use metro if they see anything.
They also want to take metro from near orsay museum to train station & go to veron . Is there a really easy way to find the CORRECT train once at the station & they speak & understand no French .

Mary, check out the Paris Metro app by MX Data, it works like a charm. It does those things you want plus you can save trips that you know you'll take, so they are ready when you are. There is also an RATP app for bus and I do believe it has Metro too, but the MX app is better for Metro, imo. With all due respect to Pat ;-)) pay no attention to all the nice, well meaning people who will say 'just go to a station and get the free Metro guide, it's sooo easy'-get the app. Also, note that the buses do work pretty well, and since they are above ground, you get sights along the way, and it may be less disorienting for a person with a less than perfect sense of direction.

mary,

One App that seems to work very well is the Presselite Paris Metro app and AFAIK it can be used off-line. I tend to use it more for planning trips, and not so much when actually riding the Metro. As pat mentioned, the Metro is very easy to use and there are large charts in each station where you can determine which routes to take.

Regarding using the Metro from a stop near the Musee d' Orsay to Veron, you can use the bahn.de website to work out the details on which station you'll be using (there are about six rail stations in Paris).

One additional point to mention is that if you're travelling with an iPhone, you'll have to be VERY careful with use of cellular data, as the charges can be HUGE.

The RATP has an app that gives directions, etc. for using mass transit. I have it on my phone; I don't use it that much because it uses up data and I can read a map, but it could be useful in this situation.

Depending on where they are near Musee d'Orsay, they could take Metro line 12 heading towards La Corneuve straight to Gare St-Lazare, the station from which the train leaves for Vernon. It's the 4th stop from where they would get on at Solferino. Teach them how to say bonjour, parlez vouz anglais to the people behind the counter at the train station and someone will be able help them. As to finding the correct train at Gare St-Lazare, it can be tricky but the key is relaxing and allowing enough time for errors. Look for the big sign that lists all the arrivals and departures and shortly before departure time the track number will populate on the sign and head for that track. Also, realize that the Gares in Paris are quite large often with multiple metro lines, a suburban train (RER) station and a long distance line (Grands Lignes) coming into the station. For someone as directionally and mass transit challenged as you describe, I would suggest taking a tour from Paris to Monet's Gardens (which is the reason that I guess they are going to Vernon).

mary,

Could you clarify whether the destination for your train trip is Veron or Vernon? There's a big difference in travel details between the two. Veron is southeast of Paris, while Vernon is northwest of Paris. Some additional information would be helpful.

I want to thank everyone for the advise on app issue. My friend will be overwhelmed & I thought this would help to plan the day ahead. I apologize Vernon is one of the day trips from Paris . My advise was to get to Giverny very early but had no advise on train situation . I could not find an early week day tour when I was there this May & the crowds were almost impossible. Thank one & all for your insight.

Mary I did the Fat Tire Bike tour to Monet's gardens about four years ago and o swear it is still one of my best memories.
Seriously consider it, a visit to market in town to buy picnic, an hour on the banks of river for lunch an easy bike ride along mostly rural bike path, plenty of time in gardens on your own and skip the lines!
You meet at Gare St Lazarre and tour guide then takes you on train, no worries, no stress, wonderful day trip. And yes I normally do everything on my own but this was such a great tour I am glad I took it

RATP does have an online routefinder, which could also help find a bus, and also some sort of app. For metro I find it easiest to just connect the dots on the color-coded map (shown in stations, guidebooks, and on free city maps distributed at hotels and elsewhere). Detailed neighborhood maps (plan du quartier) posted near the station exits will help you orient to which exit is most convenient to your destination.

I am currently using the mx data app for paris which was downloaded for free and use in concert with my google maps. Very easy and has been accurate. Wish it had the bus routes too, as I like to travel above ground and enjoy the scenery.

For trains throughout Europe, your best app is the German DB. ANY train in Europe is generally on there.

We used the app by MX Data and it got us everywhere we wanted to go easily while we were in Paris last week. As far as the train station, that can be a challenge but we found that asking a traveler got the best results when we took the train. They are going to LOVE Paris!
