Which one should I download?
Citymapper is my favorite. Successive revamps of the RATP app made it worse.
But Google maps is quite serviceable too.
Merci Balso. That's what I did. I couldn't remember which one's the best, City Mapper or Transit.
Balso is correct, the RATP has been improved to the extent that it is no longer worth using. The RATP website has become a very unfriendly and ineffective source for transportation information.
Citymapper is the very best app for transportation information in Paris.
CityMapper by a country (or city) mile.
anyone have any idea why they made the RATP site so user unfriendly after decades of it working great. I always assume they turned an intern loose -- but anyone know?
I tried using RATP many times this Sept & Oct. I was new to it, and found it very unhelpful. Now i know why! I forgot about CityMapper (hard to remember every tip on this forum when you’re on the ground - lol). I used Google Maps which was good 98% of the time.
I was in Paris a couple of weeks ago. I had a terrible time using the RATP app. I thought it was me! I had always used it in the past. A lot of WTH moments. I switched to Citymapper. I remembered seeing it recommended on this forum. Worked great. And Google Maps.
Citymapper really saved me after the Paris bus route changes this year! It’s also very good in New York and LA, I discovered.
Google maps is fine for mapping out walking routes but is fairly terrible on public transport. We made the mistake of using it in Angers last spring and it routed us in an absurd way to our hotel from the train station -- we ended up in the middle of a bridge in an isolated area with a long walk to the hotel when there was a tram stop about a block away that would have been the obvious choice. They also often leave out some services and end up routing you on less efficient ones. I'd never use it for public transport routing outside the US.
Google Maps worked well most of the time for me for the métro and buses in Paris.
I've used RATP many times. I found it functional. The last trip was June of 2018 so maybe it's become worse since then? My biggest gripe is the use of data and battery. I generally decide on my metro route before leaving a WiFi spot then turn data off. I might lose a little without the absolute latest update but it gets me where I'm going. I'll use my GPS with walking maps the sight provides but just enough to get going in the right direction, then turn RATP off. For walking maps it's no better than Google maps (and probably as battery unfriendly).
I was in Paris this past June, armed with the RATP and City Mapper apps. I also downloaded the Metro routes in PDF on my phone. This was all for naught as we ended up using Google Maps. We stayed in the 9th eme and easily traveled to every destination quickly and easily following the map, without misstep. Maps gave us route options, travel times, and walking distances. We could plan our trips in advance using the date/time field and whenever there was a service interruption, Maps provided warnings. This is not a plug for Google Maps, rather in my experience, it made transportation effortless.
