Which is best? This question has been asked before but there are no recent answers. Many apps to choose from in the App Store. Bonjour RATP? Paris Metro Map? Next Stop Paris - RATP? Hoping someone from Paris will answer. Merci!
I'm not "from Paris" but ... Citymapper has been our go-to, though Bonjour RATP is also very good (it's come a long way the past five years). Video blogger Jay Swanson mentioned the îledeFrance Mobilités app and I downloaded that for the next trip; seems pretty good.
For trip planning I use either Citymapper or the much-improved Bonjour RATP, it depends. And the electronic boards inside stations are good at keeping track of last-minute disruptions.
As a long time US city resident, I would suggest that using the station and paper maps is the best way. If you depend on an app, you may miss a posted sign about TODAY's service interruption. In many cities (including Paris and London), the transfers between lines can be very long distances, and you need to keep your wits about you in an area that has no cell service anyway.
Another factor is multiple exits in a city where certain pedestrian crossings are not permitted on the surface; You really need to go to the right stairway to reach your destination.
It is perfectly true that the maps are hard to understand. Long ago, in English As A Second Language classes, one of the hardest test/quiz tasks was extracting information from a printed bus schedule. That's the way public transit is, alas.
Google Maps is pretty great.
I rely on the wall maps in the Metro station, which seem easier now to follow than years ago.
the free paper maps they hand out at every station work very nicely
if you want to use an ap use the ratp.fr one.
first, every good map of Paris has a Metro map. With numbers and colors and everything!
second, these folks might help you figure it out
CityMapper is indispensable. It even takes into account when there are strikes or other delays. Will tell you which part of the train to get on to be at the right part for your connection, will tell you the fastest option or option with least transfers, if bus or metro or tram (or walking!) is faster, etc.
I have lived here for 17 years and use it every day.
Thank you all for your ideas! GoogleMaps Is my go to for walking around, and wall maps are enough for London, but for Paris I need a little more help to plan my routes. I've used Citymappers in the past and liked it. Mostly needed to know if there's something newer and better. Now plan to update my Citymapper and download a RATP and see which I like better after a day or two. Thanks again for your help!
Google Maps are good for walking around but are seriously lacking for information about public transportation. Citymapper is the absolute best for those wanting accurate and detailed information about public transportation in Paris.
Another voice in favor of Citymapper!
Thing about using the metro station wall maps is that first you need to know which station to descend down into. And if you prefer the bus -- as we do -- they're not a big help. An app like Citymapper avoids all that hunting.
"Google Maps are good for walking around ": True -- though in my experience their estimated walking times are based on a fit, long-legged 25-year-old who has places to get to in a hurry. I advise allowing extra time.
Didan, agree completely about the metro wall maps. As for Googlemaps, I meet the long legs part if not the other qualifiers, but at this stage in life I’m rarely on any kind of schedule. If I am, I’ve already hailed a taxi. ;>)
Google Maps has a special tab for public transport. I never use anything else and it's quite sufficient.
