Just putting it out there for a few opinions. I am thinking we need to see Versailles anyway, if even from the historical aspect and the Austrian connection. Opinions welcome, always good to have some different views.
Yes, both Palaces are quite different imo.
But if i had to choose i would select versailles.
Altho my spouse thinks once u have seen one palace or castle the rest are the same.
I have visited both and Schoenbrun has a great carriage collection which Versailles does not have but I think that it is close with Versailles winning by a little.

IMHO Schonbrunn doesn't hold a candle to Versailles. It's a great palace but Versailles is simply over the top and has been maintained to a much higher standard, especially when it comes to the grounds. The spaces in Versailles are far more grand and opulent if that's what you're looking for in a palace. I think you'll be glad you'll made to time to go to Versailles.
Schonbrunn is nice. Versailles is spectacular.
If you've been to Schonbrunn a few times, you must enjoy palaces, so yes you should go. Also the outbuildings - Marie Antoinette's Hamlet - is special. I believe the estate is larger, so consider renting bikes or using the minitram.
Yes. Both are palaces, but (imo) that's where the similarity ends. The are completely different in size, history, and opulence. Versailles is definitely a must.
The grounds at Versailles are more spectacular. When we were there, the hall of mirror was under renovation and so we didn't really get a good feel for it so when we were at Schoenbrun last year,we were much more impressed with the palace. I felt that you get a better history of Austria there than you do at Versailles which in turn helped me to understand the history of Europe,in more detail.
HI,
"...if even from the historical aspect and the Austrian connection." Exactly the reason for going to Schönbrunn and Versailles, and for me, in particular, Fontainebleau several times. I suggest you do see Versailles primarily for its historical context, Louis XIV, Louis XVI, the Unification of Germany, the Versailles peace conference, set aside ample time for touring. See the Battle Galerie.
For " the historical aspect" is why Blenheim Palace, Neues Palais in Potsdam, Konopischt, Chambord should be visited too.
I have been to both, and both are very much worth seeing. I found Versailles much more interesting, particularly the outlying Trianon palaces and Marie Antoinette's estate area. I had much of the farm and parklands to myself on a damp, chilly afternoon and felt that it belonged only to me, a treasured memory.
Have enjoyed most palaces visited so far and I won't skip Versailles if you ask me. If you like history every historical site has it's unique place / position in the past, but forming together the whole historical package so also worth to see how they are related to each other as you already plan to do.
mike - Since last May the Musée des Carrosses opposite the main entrance of Versailles is reopened, looks certainly worth a visit.
We have been to both and I agree with most, do Versailles. We did the Kings tour (you can find it on their website) and that way you get access right away and don't have to stand in line. There were just 12 of us, and our guide was very good. After the tour is over you can do the rest of the Chateaux and the outlying buildings. There is a tram, I think the cost was 6 E's that you can take if you don't want to walk the distance. To me it was worth the tour, as it wasn't that much more and you were able to visit rooms that are not open to the public. Go on the official website and get the costs, times etc. We did the morning one as we had more energy. (we are in our 70's) I hope you enjoy.
Versailles was amazing. If you can get there on a Saturday evening, the fireworks and water fountain/fire shows are magical.
I'm not a palace fan. I tend to choose other things. But Versailles is worth the hassle and expense at least once. I feel the same about The Shonbrunn. And I'm not sorry to have seen both though I wouldn't want to see both in the same trip. A palace lover would though. They are quite different. I found Versailles interior more impressive-there is nothing quite like the hall of mirrors. But I preferred the Schonbrunn grounds. But then there's a bike rental at Versailles which is a plus. The mansions beyond the palace at Versailles are interesting too. But there's nothing like the carriage house or the conservatory.
