Beauvais airport to Burgundy

We are flying into Beauvais and then driving down to a gite by Dijon. I need some advice on a good route. Mapquest puts us close to Paris but on Friday afternpon it sounds like an awful big challenge... Any good routes to suggest? Thanks in advance..Steve

Driving from Beauvais to Burgundy through Paris requires indeed some preperation. There are two main circular roads around downtown Paris, the shortest is Le (Boulevard) Périférique and is to keep it simple best to avoid. The larger one is the A86 and runs through the suburbs of Paris. For you in terms of distance it doesn’t make much of a difference, if you drive it clockwise or counter-clockwise. But the latter has a toll-tunnel, so to avoid that I describe the clockwise option, so by-passing Paris at the eastern side and keeping in mind direction Lyon.

Starting from Beauvais follow the toll-highway A16 to Paris. Best is to use the roadnumbers, they are indicated in a seperate red sign on top of the large ones, sometimes another with E (European number, green, here E401). After 44km the tollroad ends and becomes N1, but stay on it and follow direction airport Ch. De Gaulle. Be aware that the road has over 6km till the crossing with the N104 level crossings and varied speedlimits. Turn left and follow N104 again direction CDG till it hits the A1. There turn right and follow Paris A1, after some 17km follow Bordeaux-Nantes-Lyon A3 (above the right exit lane), clearly shown on large gantry style signposts. Actually this highway section makes after a few km as a whole a left turn, flying over the A1, where you start bypassing Paris at the eastside.

You have to follow the A3 over some 9km till it hits the ringroad A86! That also means keep following direction Bordeaux-Nantes-Lyon with on top A86. Don’t make the mistake staying on the A3, because it goes straight to downtown Paris! After a while on the A86 you see sometimes N186A instead of A86, no worry it’s actually the same road. So keep following this windy road clockwise around Paris over 25km, till you see A6 (A10) on top of the signs. That’s nearby airport Orly, you have to keep the lane following Bordeaux-Nantes-Lyon that makes later a left turn underneath the A86 and joins the A6 to Lyon. After just a few km the road splits in a direction to Bordeaux-Nantes A10 and Lyon A6 (E15). Keep following Lyon and you go straight to Burgundy! Mainly the highways just close to Paris are free, mainroads are tollroads, like the A6 to Lyon.

I have used numbers for the roads so you can find them easily on the map and helps as names only can be sometimes confusing. But in short following Lyon is in your case the way to drive around Paris. You can already practice a bit at home with the help of Google Maps and Streetview. Myself I use also this route when driving from Lille (A1) via CDG to Burgundy. Have to say there is no guarantee you will not have to deal with traffic-jams, so a cellphone can be usefull for informing your B&B host if necessary.
