We will be driving from Beaune to Chamonix in September and are curious about recommended route points of interest along the route.

On the motorway, you pass by Bourg en Bresse. Near Bourg en Bresse, the royal Monastery of Brou is beautiful and under-visited.
If you are OK with a diversion that will add 1.5 hours of driving to the trip, instead of staying on the A40 all the way, you can leave it at Eloise and drive to Annecy (where you can stop by the Imperial hotel to see the lake, or make a longer visit to the city center where a good look would take about 2 hours).
From Annecy, drive the D909 to col des Aravis. Admire Mont Blanc views from there, then take care on the drive down to La Giettaz, and head to St Gervais via Megève. The last stretch to Chamonix is easy.
