Beaune - no car - Stay in city center or other options?

Beaune - no car - Do we need to stay in city center?
Mar 27, 2018, 12:25 PM
My friend and I will be in Beaune about a day and a half during the last week in August, and want to make the best of our visit.

We will arrive in Paris in the morning, and the current plan is to take train straight from Paris to Beaune. (paris is last stop on the trip).
We thought we would stay in Beaune city center and walk most places and maybe rent a bike to get to vineyards, or do a vineyard tour/visit. Finding the accommodations thinning out, and the ones with good reviews and AC (it's the end of August) on the expensive side.

My Question
How far out of city center can we take an accommodation, and still walk to downtown for the restaurants etc.?? It's really a little difficult to tell just looking at a map. Or are we missing some other opportunities, like Nuit Saint Georges (where accommodations might be a little less expensive, but town just as pretty and wine just as wonderful...or better!)

One of the challenges of planning this involves getting from point A to point B in a timely manner via train. We go to Burgundy for the day and a half, and then down to annecy for 2.5 days then back to Paris for quick stop before heading home.

Any input or suggestions about Beaune, or any of the above question appreciated!

The wine villages outside of Beaune are nice but we prefer to stay in the town center with more restaurants and things to do/see. With only a day and a half, I recommend thay you stay in Beaune.

Yes, there are some, but looking city center, for 2 real beds (not sofa beds) and AC..... What I have seen is close to $600. (remember exchange rate not great right now) Have some accommodation now at Des Remparts hotel, but trying to ascertain if this is best option.

Bicycle. Otherwise you are stuck in Beaune, which is nice for about half a day.

The rental shop, in Beaune, can advise you on routes.

Walking distanced are up to you. It's flat near the town, how far do you want to walk?

Nuits Saint Georges is an option, especially if you can walk to the train station.

There's an Ibis hotel just south of the center, on rue Henri Dunant. It should be a reasonable walk into the center where the Hotel Dieu and market square are. I haven't stayed there, and it won't have any Olde Worlde charm, but Ibis is usually a good value.

Adam is usually right, but I'd say Beaune is worth a full day, especially if you want to spend a good part of it eating and/or drinking.

And I hope you know that the train from Paris to Beaune requires a change in Dijon. It's easy but necessary.

Was able to get a reservation at (Rick Steves recommended) Des Remparts hotel in Beaune that looks like it's no more than a 5-10 minute walk to city center and the hotel had the room with the twin beds, AC and basic amenities we were looking for, and had mostly pretty good reviews. If exchange rate doesn't drop further it will only be about $220 total for each of us (so about $440 for both nights). Now to find a good tour guide so we might visit some of the grand cru wineries for a tasting!! :-) We will rent some bikes as well I am sure.

Thank you all for the input!!! If any suggestions regarding the wine tours you liked please share...thank you!

We stayed for 3 days 4 nights in Feb a few years back, no problem finding things to do even out of season. Stayed right in the middle and had some lovely walks up into the vineyards and along to Pommard, no need for a car, the walking meant we could enjoy all the delicious food and wine! The market was stunning as was the rest of the village. Enjoy

Without transport being inside the ring road is a good idea. I'd suggest staying in the south half of that area. I've walked around quite a bit and it seems better maintained with more services/restaurants in the south half.

Wherever you stay, have them help with restaurant reservations. My personal anecdotal experience suggests that if you don't need a reservation, it's probably not any good (yes terrible food is a possibility).
