I am going on the 14 day European tour and we have free time in Beaune. Please tell me what you saw and did while you were in Beaune. I would like to prepare myself and know in advance what my options are so I can plan accordingly. Thank you.
I guess the principal sights of the town would be (1) the walled town itself, including walking the ramparts; (2) the Hotel Dieu, (3) Various wine-tasting options, including the Marche aux Vins and the Caves de Couvent des Cordelier.
A guidebook will help you.
I especially enjoyed renting a bicycle and exploring north and south of the town. But I like that sort of thing.
I expect your tour guides will give you some good suggestions too.
A great place to walk and explore. Be sure to see the hospital ...and explore it, especially the 'sick ward' and the restored painting.
Hotel-Dieu (hospital), but it's probably included in your tour.
Museum of Wine (formerly the ducal palace).
Notre-Dame Basilica.
Wine stores and tastings if you're into that.
All these are in the compact central area. Hopefully you'll also have time, perhaps as part of your tour, to get out into the vineyards to the north, west, and south.
There's a miniature "train" ride that leaves a couple of times a day from in front of the Hotel-Dieu and takes about an hour to go through the town and out toward the vineyards, with recorded descriptions in various languages. We found it pretty hokey and quite uncomfortable over the cobblestoned streets.
