I plan to stay in Beaune for 2 nights, and am looking at some Air BNB places and some hotels. We will do 1 full day wine tour and just wander on the shoulder day. Any recommendations for the “ideal” location to enjoy walking around eating, drinking and wandering? It will be August, so also considering some locations a little further out with swimming pools. Welcome any thoughts!!
We are staying in Beaune the latter part of August. From what I can tell, there aren't really any bad places to stay. It is such a small town. I think you can walk from one end to the other in about 15 minutes. I just wanted to stay within the city walls.
We are going to rent a bike and do the wine road south, which looks quite fun.
My take is a little different than most. I found Beaune to be well kept in the half of the town (inside the ring) where the tourist sights are located. The other half (even inside the ring) is much more run down. I don't think it's a safety issue. I didn't notice any problems when I walked the area. It's just not as nicely kept up so not as pretty.
A swimming pool would be nice in August. I didn't particularly like Beaune but it's personal taste. I prefer medieval towns, Beaune looks more 17/18 century.
I found any restaurant worth dining at requires reservations. The good ones will be full every evening. If it doesn't require reservations, it's probably not good - at least that was my experience (and I was there in relatively uncrowded May). When you book something, ask for recommendations. It's worth making a phone call from the states to book dinner or ask if your host will help.
A couple of years ago we stayed in Beaune at Les Jardins de Lois, a "B&B" located just outside of the city walls - actually right across the street. It was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed it. There is a lovely garden. I cannot recall if they have a pool. They also make their own wine :-). We walked a lot, to dinners and after dinner, so quite a convenient location. This was a more luxury B&B, with fabulous breakfasts too.
