Bayeux to Mont St. Michel and Hotel(s) on the MSM Island

I want to travel from Bayeux to MSM on Tue 8/27. Stay at a hotel on the MSM island Tuesday 8/27.

I need help...

  1. Is via train from Bayeux to MSM (Pontorson) the best way to get to MSM? If so, are there taxi's that travel from Pontorson to MSM?

  2. Has anyone stayed at a hotel on the island. Advice I've read thus far indicates to leave heavy luggage behind and do not take to the hotel. I won't have that option since I am using public transit.

Please respond with your experiences.

Thanks in advance for the help.

There is no reason you can’t take your bag with you. People give that advice because you may be walking up hill or several flights of stairs. If you can pull your bag alongside you when walking or carry it upstairs, you should be fine. Remember, there is no reason you can’t take a rest break if needed.

There are also buses that are waiting when you get off the train at Pontorson to take you to Mt Saint Michel. Does your luggage have wheels? Pack it so you are able to carry it if you need to walk up stairs or hills like the previous poster mentioned.

We stayed on the island and considered it a “once in a lifetime” experience. We parked our car in the lots across the bridge, took as little as possible onto the island and returned the next morning to our locked car. When the crowds leave it is delightful and I would highly recommend it. There are stairs, etc but you could pull your luggage along and it would not be too bad......make your reservation ASAP as it fills up quickly!

I will only add that most luggage wheels aren't much of an advantage on MSM. Particularly those suitcases with four small wheels you see going through the airport. The main drag is cobblestones (not to mention numerous stairs), and I have seen young healthy people struggling with large rolling suitcases. Be prepared to carry whatever you bring onto the island.
