Bayeux Tapestry

I was disappointed to learn that we will miss seeing the Bayeux tapestry when we are in Normandy fall of next year but just read that it will be on display at the British Museum from Sept 2026 to July 2027! London is also a stop on our trip next fall so I'm glad we will be able to see it!

Just FYI for those who might miss it in Normandy this fall/next year but may be able to see it in London too! (gifted article linked below)

Yes, that's one of the reasons Macron is in London right now - the announcement will be made tomorrow when he is at the British Museum.

If anyone were interested, the Château de Pirou, located north-northwest of Coutances roughly between Gouville-sur-Mer and Creances, has a 20th century tapestry made by hand -- by a single person, Thèrèse Ozenne. It depicts events shown on the Bayeux Tapestry but also includes the Norman invasion of southern Italy and Sicily. At 58 meters long, it took Mme. Ozenne 16 years, from 1976 and 1992, to complete. And, to satisfy the purists, neither the Bayeux Tapestry nor the Pirou Tapestry are actually tapestries. They're embroideries.

The Pirou château is a relatively small fortified structure built to defend the coast and collect customs fees from area ports. Before it was rebuilt in stone, an earlier wood fort at that location was placed under seige and burned by Viking marauders, leading to the legend of the Geese of Pirou.

Bob,
Thank you for the info! If I get back to that part of France again I will make it a priority to see the "new" embroidery.
