Bayeux restaurant suggestions

Seeking Bayeux area restaurants- not crazy expensive!

Most of the bistros in town are quite lovely-there are several around the back of the cathedral that I enjoyed; I don't remember the specific names but all of them provide good, traditional Norman food like duck and Camembert, with a glass of Calvados, of course.

Many of them offer pizza and burgers for the less adventurous, which on my visit, seemed to be the Brits, but maybe that's because so many British people visit Bayeux ;)

Le Pommier Restaurant was excellent and reasonably priced.
Also ate at Restaurant Le Drakkar but it wasn't particularly memorable. I think you can do better.
We tried to get a table at La Rapiere (more expensive but highly recommended), but it was booked.

Highly recommend Le Rapier. We all opted for one of the menu choices with 3 or 4 courses and a wine pairing. The Amuse Bouche was a tiny shot of gazpacho with cucumber and mint. For a first course we had oysters on the half shell, baked oysters in a buttery cream sauce and foie gras. All were fantastic. The palate cleanser was apple sorbet with calvados. Our mains included lamb and roasted chicken. All were good, but the vegetables served along side were delicious. The cheese course was beautifully presented and featured several local choices in addition to other French cheeses. For dessert we had cheesecake, apple tart with ice cream and coconut Panama cotta with pineapple. All were great, as was the service. The meal totaled about $75 per person, but was well worth it.

We had dinner twice at L'Assiette Normande near the cathedral. Nice meals, friendly service, reasonably priced.

  1. L'Assiette Normande: probably our favorite during a 6-night stay.
  2. Le Moulin De La Galette: enjoyed a nice lunch on a chilly day; nice views of the river.
  3. Au Georges VII: our a.m. stop for cafe and croissants. Can't comment on lunch/dinner. Appeared to be more of a cafe than full-service restaurant, but I see that TripAdvisor reviewers have given it good grades for full meals. Certainly not "crazy expensive."
  4. La Taverne des Ducs: ho-hum; appeared to be popular with tour bus groups.
  5. Le Marsala: interesting mix of Norman specialties and pizza (which looked good); seemed to be popular with locals.
  6. Hôtel Reine Mathilde: on a warm night we enjoyed an excellent meal outside on their plaza.

Should you venture into the Cider/Cheese route region -- Pays d'Auge -- look for Au p'tit Normand in the very charming village of Cambremer. We had a memorable lunch. Although we stumbled in without reservations, I think reservations -- especially at dinner time -- would be advised.

We did the Moulin de la Galette for dinner, and would happily eat there again for any meal. Scenic spot, near all the sites. Casual.
