Bayeux lodging

I've got my brother and his wife, and my brother in law accompanying me to normandy for 4 days to see the D Day sites and take some tours. None of them have been to Europe before(I've been 20+ times) Im staying in or near Bayeux, and that is my question:

Should I stay in the town of Bayeux, where I pay more for lodging and probably am going to have problems parking my rental car/or paying for parking?....

Or stay on the outskirts of town in a country setting. its cheaper, easy parking, but we would have to drive into town to see it?

I guess my question is, is Bayeux worth it to stay in the city center? how big is it? does it have the historic feel?

any other advice will be welcomed.... normally I just show up in europe with my wife and kids and we wing it. This time I want to make a great experience for my family, while also giving them downtime. its going to be 3 days in london, 4 days in bayeux, 1 day in mont st michel, and 1 night in paris.

I would suggest you take a look at Hotel Particulier Poppa. We had a fabulous stay there and it included parking. Sophie and Phillipe are marvelous hosts, beautiful large rooms, breakfast is fantastic, rates are more than reasonable and it is easy walking distance to everything in Baueux. Highly recommend!

Bayeux has been discussed many times in this forum. If you go to the search area at the top left of this site and type in Bayeux, there are lots of lodging recommendations. Also, RS guidebook has some.
Why Paris for only 1 night?
Happy planning!

Yes, stay in Bayeux! They have parking in front courtyard. It is an historic hotel with a legacy that goes way back, The same family owns it and can share their WWII stories with you. They booked a tour of the American D-Day sites for us but we explored the Canadian and British beaches, museums on our own. Everything was very marked.

I stayed at the Hotel Churchill which is 300 feet from The Overlord Normandy Battlefield tour pickup site. The Hotel has WWII Memorabilia and has parking as well and is well located for visiting The Tapistry of William theConquerer and Restaurants and they also run a Shuttle to Mt St Michel.

Yes, Bayeux is absolutely wonderful and very worth it. It’s charming and very walkable. Walkable is a big advantange when you have many people b/c everyone has some independence and can go where they want when you’re not out driving to sites.
We have been 6 or 7 times and we always stay at Hotel d’Argouges in the heart of town. It’s off the street down a driveway so is quiet, has free pkng on their property, 2 lovely gardens, lots of flowers every where. Rooms are large, bathrooms large, good beds. It’s owned and run by a very nice French family who, along w their staff, go out of their way to be friendly, welcoming and helpful.
It’s recommended by Rick in the RS France guide.

Mark,

I'd suggest staying at one of the hotels in town, as it will be a much nicer experience as well as being convenient to tour pickup locations. You'll probably all enjoy walking around in the evenings to just see the town or visit one of the excellent restaurants.

Hotel Churchill and Hotel d'Argouges would both be convenient. You might also have a look at the RS France guidebook.

You don’t mention your dates, but assuming that the trip is 2019, keep in mind this is the 75th anniversary of D-Day and don’t wait too long to reserve. We loved Bayeux and felt it was well worth staying in town. It’s easily walked, has a different vibe in the evening when the tour groups are gone, and would allow members of your group to walk around the town on their own. We are fans of Hotel d’Argouges as well.

We had a rental car and stayed at a marvelous B&B just outside Villers-Bocage, about 10 miles southeast of Bayeux and an easy drive to Bayeux, D Day beaches, and about 90 minutes to MSM via motorway. Check out bandbnormandie.com. We took a D Day tour then returned to spend another full day on places barely visited. It was easy to park in Bayeux and sample what the town had to offer. It was also easy to drive to smaller towns as we drifted back from MSM along the back roads, stopping to buy local wares, foods, and Calvados. Bayeux was great and staying there is always an option but with four days, staying in the countryside might be more enjoyable.

A couple of years ago we stayed at the Logis des Remparts in Bayeux. There was a ton of free parking on the street directly outside the door. The room was comfortable and the location convenient to the town. Breakfast was an optional add-on as I recall. I thInk it was in Rick’s book. We thought it was well priced.
