In June I will be going on a 1/2 day overlord tour from bayeaux (morning) and then driving to Mont Saint Michel where I will spend the night. Are there sights not to be missed along the way? Since I'll be there overnight, I don't have to see much that day. Wondering if I should take the coastal route or just go directly. Any thoughts would be appreciated. thanks sue
We took the motorway outside Villers-Bocage, about 90 minutes to MSM, arriving before the tours that swamp the place. Since you will arrive at the height of the tour buses hordes after the half day tour, you might consider the coastal route to arrive MSM as the tour buses depart. For us, two or three hours was plenty and then we drove around the bay to Cancale, about 15 miles, for a wonderful lunch on quay, with MSM visible across the water. We then drifted back to Bayeux on the back roads, stopping to buy local eats and trinkets in the little villages along the way. WE did it all in one day. Lucky you, with an overnight and a second day to return to Bayeux. Safe travels.
Any chance you can do a full day tour with Overlord? A half day is so short for all there is to see. Then you could drive the fast route to Mont St. Michel on the freeway which is a nice drive.
It is especially further than MSM, in Bretagne, that it would be worth spending some time (Cancale, St Malo, Fougères...). On your way from Bayeux, you could stop in Villedieu-les-Poêles or with a small detour in Granville.
I drove directly from Bayeux, then went into Brittany (Cancale, St. Malo, Dinan,...)
Thank you for the replies. I am coming originally from Honfleur and then going on to Cancale and the rest of the northern Brittany coast. I was especially interested in the drive between Bayeux and MSM. Villedieu-les-Poeles and Grandville sound like they are worth a detour. sue
