Bayeaux Tapestry Museum closing for renovations

I just came across this announcement on the website. That's going to change my plans of when I'll plan a trip to the region, or maybe it means I'll have to visit Normandy twice...

VISITORS INFORMATION: The Bayeux Tapestry Museum will close its doors to the public, for renovation work, from September *2025*. Reopening planned for spring 2027. Thank you for your understanding.

OrdTraveler, the closing is next October (2025) not this October.

Not being a taepstry kind of guy, I wrested with going to see this. I'm glad I did, I really enjoyed it.

Oh thank you! Rather important detail I missed!! I even went out to the website to see for myself and still missed "2025".

I wonder when/if I would have noticed my oversight??? I need that second cup of coffee!!

Thanks for the review - this is one of those bucket list things for me I've just never managed to schedule previously.

We saw it last month. It’s very interesting and quite impressive. See it while you can!

Thank you for sharing this. Now, the big decision...try to visit next year or wait until after the renovations......

Wow. I just popped on to ask about train tickets to Bayeux and saw this. Thank you for the information. My wife has wanted to see this for years and we'll make sure to prioritize it this trip.

Now the question is: will they take advantage of the planned museum closing to finally send the Tapestry on loan to England, as has been promised ?? We shall see !

Good question Kim, sadly it appears it will remain in storage. https://www.bayeuxmuseum.com/en/actus/what-will-the-new-bayeux-tapestry-museum-look-like/. I had found another article that said the train it wasn't going to England is because it needs significant repairs.

On another note, from the link;

The shared objective is to complete the project with a view to opening
the new Bayeux Tapestry Museum in 2027, to mark the millennium of the
birth of William the Conqueror.

That's the kind of milestone fun fact that avirosemail likes to post on this Forum. I wonder if he's already in the planning stages for a post on September 9, 2027?

It's a superb historical artifact that tells us so much about what happened in 1066 and how history is written by the winners. It was very well displayed when I last saw it in 2013, and the surrounding exhibits were also very good. No doubt the renovations will improve the experience, and give me an excuse to see it again. Meanwhile, Bayeux has the cathedral, museum, nearby D-Day sites, and its own charm and beauty to keep visitors coming.

OMG!!!

We just booked travel to France for September 2025 and planned to see the tapestry. The museum web site stating they will be closing in "September 2025" isn't exactly a precision data point.

Closing September 1st?
September 15th?
September 30th?

It makes a difference. \

Does anyone have more precise information on the closing date that they could share??

I noticed this awhile ago while doing research for our trip next summer. Luckily we are going in June 2025 and so will get to see it. It is one of my bucket list things.

@glen

I found this article from February of this year which says "...opening the new Bayeux Tapestry Museum in 2027, to mark the millennium of the birth of William the Conqueror. To meet this deadline, the current museum will have to be closed to the public after the 2025 summer season." Not an exact date, but makes me think earlier in September rather than later.

We loved seeing the tapestry in 2022, but we head back to the area in 2026 and it looks like we won't see it. I noticed the RS tours all say that the Tapestry museum is closed.

We are also planing a trip to northern France in September 2025. I emailed the museum to ask about the exact date in September. I received a response very quickly.

Bonjour,

We have well received your request, unfortunately we don't know yet the exact date of closure.

We will publish it on our website as soon as we get it.

Kind regards.

Dang it. I'll be in Paris for a month, May - Jun 2026, & was planning on spending a few days in Bayeux and see the tapestry. Well, it gives me an excuse to return to France, which I really don't need an excuse.

They just got done loaning the Tapestry to England a few years ago. Why didn't they renovate then?

It's pretty impressive. We saw it in April. My husband was enthusiastic and I was sure, fine. My bad. What a marvelous piece of history.
