We are leaning to renting a car to see the three areas mentioned and end up in Frankfurt for flight home. So I am trying to pick a base location in Bavaria to have a manageable one day drive to Annecy. Initially I was thinking of Bamburg, Germany as a base but that leaves over a 7 hour drive to Annecy. Another option is to take two days to drive to Annecy so a suggestion of where to stop would be appreciated. We have enough time to do justice to all three areas but looking for ideas of how to go about it. Thanks
From Bamberg - don't forget to try the rauchbier - I would stop in Strasbourg and/or Colmar. They are beautiful cities and are about midway to Annecy.
Where do you fly into? If you are only able to start in Bamberg, then a one night stop in Freiburg would be nice - fabulous little city. Then stop in Colmar on your way back up to Frankfurt.
But if you can go somewhere other than Bamberg to start then why not get down into southern Bavaria, maybe the the GP area, then drive one day through the Alps to Annecy? It's still 6 hours, but the Alpine scenery is way better than the autobahn from Bamberg through the nondescript rolling plains. Then stop off in Freiburg or Colmar on the way back up to Frankfurt?
Alsace/Freiburg, btw, is well worth a couple of days to explore and enjoy.
We are starting in Prague, taking a train to Munich and picking up a car. We have previously visited Switzerland and Austria so I was trying to avoid southern Bavaria on this trip and concentrate on northern section. Freiburg might be a good option to cut trip into two days to Annecy. There is no real attachment to Bamberg other than what I have researched on this forum. We haven't made a decision on where to base our stay in Alsace. Thanks for any and all input.
