We are planning a Canal du Midi barge trip that coincides with being in Carcassone on Bastille day (7/14). Does anyone know if it is feasible to view the fireworks by boat? Where the best place for viewing is? Any tips and tricks to make this work? Because we have the boat, we'd rather not join the hoards of people that will be watching from the shore?
First, you should check in advance to see if the fireworks are the evening of the 13th, at midnight, or on the 14th. It varies. My in-laws' village used to be at midnight 13th-14th, a neighboring village the 14th after sunset. Next, the photos we've seen show the fireworks shooting from the top of the hill, from the Cite. The canal is on the other side of the lower town, the Bastide. Are there other fireworks along the canal? Lucky you. That's a great place to be for "le 14".
How would one find out which night the fireworks are? I just assumed they were on the evening of the 14th. I have googled for additional information and cannot find any. Any ideas?
Once again, joinusinfrance, the best podcast on all things French has the answer - check out episode 23:

They discuss the July 14th fireworks in Carcassone at the very end of the show. I encourage you and everyone else to listen to more episodes. There's nothing else like it out there!

I agree about Join Us in France and second what you say, Matt. I just listened to two podcasts on Toulouse while we were there. They gave me a lot of insight on the city.
