Will fly to Basel, rent a car, then travel on to Alsace. Any recommendations for first night...city and lodging....?

Rent the car from the French side of Basel airport (i.e. a French company) it will be cheaper.
Basel is more expensive than Alsace, and most hotels have no parking. Head straight to one of the Alsatian wine villages.
Or, locals tip, cross the Rhine to the German side, the wine villages on the German side start on the edge of Basel, within sight of the airport (Alsation wine villages are a lot further north). Many have hotels. A lot less driving on day 1.
