Base in Saint-Rémy or Nîmes?

Good day,

We are trying to decide on where to spend five nights - Saint-Rémy or Nîmes. I've reviewed both and there are lots of comments for both. We enjoy walkable towns, especially to start or end the day. My thoughts are below:

  • Saint-Rémy is attractive to us since it is a smaller town and we found availability at a nice bed and breakfast.
  • Nîmes is attractive to us because it is on a TGV train line and the local Roman ruins. We also found nice accommodations.

A car rental is planned for at least part of our time in the area and will visit both along with the Pont du Gard, Uzès, and Arles. This part of our trip is between time in Toulouse and Lyon.

Thank you

If you do choose Saint Rémy, you need a car the whole time. There is hardly any usable public transport (only a bus to Avignon a few times/day).
If you choose Nîmes, you need to figure out parking.
Saint-Rémy is more central for "Provence", but Nîmes (technically not in Provence) is very central for Arles, Uzès & Pont du Gard, and has more going on.

Take TGV to Avignon. Rent car there and stay in SR. We spent a month last summer in the area. Easy and best to plan to get around by car. We said we could have stayed a whole year and not run out of things to do. We did Nimes and PDG from there one day. But SR is more central to other sites. And is a lovely town. Look for blog posts and books about SR by Keith Van Sickle. And follow his very precise directions to the “secret” parking lot in SR. Enjoy the planning!

Thanks for the note about Keith Van Sickle, I’ve started looking at his website and he certainly makes Saint-Rémy an attractive place to stay.
