Hi, I'm looking for a good base for 5 days in Provence/south France with good public transit connections for day trips in early August. I could also split for 2 and 3 days if that is better. Thanks, Elaine

The best base(s) will depend on where you want to go. What towns are you targeting? If you want to see some of the tiny places, you might consider including a one-day bus or van tour in your itinerary. Public transportation (which is how I travel, as well) has its limitations.

Hi, I plan to visit Provence in late April this year. I too was looking for a base for daytrips and I think Avignon will work. It has bus and rail connections to places i want to visit on a daytrip-Pont du Gard, Orange, Vaison la Romaine, St Remy maybe Nimes. Most of these places are maybe 30-45 minutes from Avignon. Then take the TGV from Avignon back to Paris. Enjoy!

I'm planning a trip there now and am finding Avignon to be a very good base because of the long-distance AGV trains and more local train options.
