We are going to Burgundy and Provence in mid June. Is there a way to get the barge and canal or river experience for just 3 or 4 days without the full tour from Paris? We were hoping to get a perspective different from the roads.

Are you looking for a crewed barge or a self drive experience? Most crewed barges are 6 nights/7 days. I did come across one company in Burgundy that offers shorter cruises.
You'll have to do your own vetting if interested. You do charter the entire boat including crew and guided tours.
You may find a self drive barge for 3/4 days in Burgundy.
As an alternative you might consider biking or walking the footpaths along the canals from village to village.

Leboat. We cruised the Midi Canal, have been traveling for 60 years, 72 countries and the self drive barge (cabin cruiser) is one of our top 5 trips.
