Has anyone taken a canal barge tour? Are they worth it?
Barge travel on canals is very, very, very slow.
Do you have a specific tour in mind? What I mostly have in mind are the barge rental operations, especially common on Canal du Midi and Canal de Bourgogne, but these aren't tours.
All inland waterways travel, whether barges in canals or specialized river cruises, are more costly than open-sea ship voyages. You can look at the cruisecritic website for some idea of the array of choices:
Hi
Possibly a bit late now but I just saw your question while looking for some tip about our trip to the south of France this summer. In 2019 we did a barge trip in champagne on a boat called Serenity. We got a serious shock when we first started looking at barge trip prices but found this company that was much more affordable – we paid about $3000 total each for our cabin. Amazing trip, great food both onboard and at the restaurants in the evening, good mix of excursions and our crew looked after us so well.
Would totally recommend it – their website is serenitybarge.com and the owner Claire is really friendly and can answer any questions.
A poster mentioned this one in another thread. I wish I had seen it earlier in my planning, now I can't get the times to line up with our needs. Not cheap, though.
