Hi all. What we want to do is about a week to 10 days in France, including a barge tour of 3-4 days in Burgundy. All suggestions greatly appreciated.
There have been quite a few posts recently since Rick aired the segment on barge cruises. Use the search function and filter to forum and then 6 months.
What type of barge did you have in mind? There are DIY barges where you do everything. Or you can charter the entire barge with a crew. Or you can book a cabin on a crewed barge. Most barge trips are for 7 days.
Here's a link to the blogs of Barge Lady Cruises, a Chicago based company that has been selling barge cruises in Europe for ages. We booked 2 cabins with them 25 years ago on a crewed barge cruise in Burgundy. Their website is a good source of information if you're looking for a small barge experience even if you don't book through them.
We are planning a barge trip in Burgundy for 2027. We have done a do-it-yourself cruise on the Canal du Midi (too much work) and a week-long chartered barge in the Loire with friends. The DIY was with Le Boat and the Loire was through French Waterways although the barge was owned by European Waterways. FW was a great company to work with. The cruise was one of the best vacations I’ve ever had. I think most of their cruises are for a whole week, though. I would highly recommend FW and EW for outstanding service and attention to detail. Wine, food, accommodations and excursions were all first class.
