Barcelona - Paris Itinerary suggestions please

Hello, wise (or at least experienced) travelers! We just booked 14 hotel nights in September, into Barcelona and out of Paris, and would appreciate itinerary suggestions.

We wish to include Barcelona, the South of France, and a trip to the Normandy beaches. We have been to Paris and want to spent at least 4 days there. The Marriott 5 nights for the price of 4 (using reward points) also tempts us to spend more time in Paris, but we don't want to be frugal to the point of stupid.

We like to be efficient with travel days, and when possible park ourselves for a few days in a town we can use as a base. We will rent a car when needed, but expect to take the TGV from south of France to Paris.

Do you think a day trip (guided tour) from Paris to Normandy beaches is sufficient to get a good understanding and appreciation of the history?

I know it's a big area to cover in two weeks, and am grateful for suggestions on how to break it down a far as nights per town, which town(s) to stay in South of France, and efficient ways to get from point A to point B. We are active travelers, and look forward to the art museums in southern France.

Many thanks!

There's no fault in spending 5 nights in Paris. There's always more to see in the city, and if you will day-trip to Normandy, I'd consider the 5th night pretty necessary.

From Barcelona by TGV to the area of Nimes or Avignon takes 4-5 hours and either town has enough bus/train connections for a few days of sightseeing nearby. If you're looking to the Nice area as well, or instead, then I'd fly from Barcelona to Nice (www.skyscanner.com), before working your way north through France by train.

TGV tickets for September have already been on sale for a month or more, so some of the cheapest fares will be selling out. For any remaining advance discounts, book the longer train rides as soon as you are ready to commit. You can compare prices at www.capitainetrain.com or www.raileurope.com for easiest credit card processing.

I'd do something like this, using TGV all the way ...

1-4 Barcelona
5-7 Nimes/Avignon/Arles
8-9 Bayeux (you will have to travel thru Paris)
10-14 Paris
