Barcelona and South of France Ideas

We are flying return out of Barcelona and have 1 spare week up our sleeves - 7 days. Our dates are 1-8 August. On the 9th we have to fly to Mallorca for a wedding.
Would love some ideas of where we should go. Having limited time, we want to minimise the amount in transit. Neither of us have done any part of France, given it is so close we thought that might be the go...
Any ideas or advice is greatly appreciated!

Hi!
Have you explored Barcelona already before? And if you like to go to France, how would you go there? by train, car or plane?

That's an interesting part of France just north of the border. I just day-tripped to Narbonne; it was attractive. Perpignan is a bit more rough-and-ready, somehow, but it has the interesting Palace of the Kings of Majorca (essentially unfurnished). The trip on the French Yellow Train through the Pyrenees between Bourg-Madame and Villefranche-de-Conflent would be possible; there's regular rail service running west from Perpignan to connect with the Yellow Train, or you could drive. Note that Villefranche-de-Conflent is very, very touristy. Bourg-Madame is a couple of miles from the beautiful (but very hot in the summer) hill town of Puigcerda (Spain).

I also liked the town of Pezenas (France) as well--lots of craft shops there.

It would be easy to fill a week on each side of the border. There are many interesting towns in Catalunya, which has coastline as well as mountains. A car would be very helpful there.
