Avoiding tollways

We will be in France for 16 nights the first couple of weeks in October.

Plan is to fly into Paris and perhaps stay in Sens the first night and go from there.

We will principally be visiting the Massif Central.

Have looked at the tollway map of France and see a lot of tollways. We would prefer NOT to use them as they are quite expensive and "rob" you of seeing much of the countryside. Have driven in France quite a few times but this is a tough one.

Any opinions on this will GREATLY be appreciated.

Many thanks in advance,

Richard and Mary Shaw

We downloaded the Google map for France onto our non- Apple tablet for our trip to Burgundy last October. We also downloaded the map onto my iPad, but we found it didn't work as well. We found that the Google map plus satellite worked great for showing us good non-toll routes while we drove (off-line). We also had a Michelin map iof the area ti see a bigger picture. Have a wonderful trip!

They are not called "tollways", they are Autoroutes, some of which some have tolls but not all.
I suggest you plot your routes using https://www.viamichelin.com/ and tick the option "avoid tolls". This will then plot an appropriate route.

Get detailed regional maps for the areas you will be visiting. N roads are well maintained highways that pretty much track with the Autoroute, but offer more scenery. D roads are departmental highways and are also well maintained. I have used the Autoroute to get from A to B quickly, and the N and D routes for more leisurely driving.

I prefer paper maps to GPS or Google Maps because I can see the big picture and can plan my route the night before. Maps also show me places of interest that I might otherwise miss.

Most GPS have an "avoid toll" option. In Garmen, it's in settings. In TomTom it's part of each search. I'm not using either now but I used to do a search without tolls and with tolls, then decide between the two. Sometimes the time lost to skipping a toll bridge was enough for me to opt for tolls, other times you don't lose much time at all skipping tolls.

You could do the same with Via Michelin and plan your routes to avoid tolls as much as possible.

I told my GPS to avoid tolls. Worked like a charm. I went down so interesting French roads, but got to see the countryside up close and personal. Also, saw great small villages and ate at interesting little restaurants/cafes. As said above, you can co-ordinate your gps with maps to see what is interesting on the way. Found Caverne du Pont-d'Arc this way. Was a great 2 hours. Note: Book days before. They sell out quickly.

One Autoroute that is actually worthwhile for the scenery is the A75, which runs from Clermont-Ferrand in the Auvergne south almost to the Mediterranean. We've driven it many times, and I believe a lot of it used to be toll-free, but that may no longer be the case.
