Avoid Versailles on Tuesday’s?

Hi,

We are going to Paris this august.

Our current plans call for visiting Versailles on a Tuesday afternoon - but recently I read in RS Best of Europe book to avoid Versailles on Sunday and Tuesday’s ( i guess since Lourve is closed on Tuesday, tourist go to Versailles that day)

Question: Does it really get that jammed on Tuesday to merit a change of plans?

TIA!

Get the earliest timed admission and you will be a step ahead of the crowds.

I was there post Delta and pre Omicron, last October. And the only day that worked was Tuesday.

I had 9 am tix, got there 15-20 minutes before opening, was #10 or so in line, so nothing crazy.

I was there for 5 1/2 hrs (ate lunch by the canal, had a wonderful crepe), and when I left, about 230 p, the line for those WITH TICKETS had easily a 30+ wait, just to get in.

so yes, first am tickets are best.

got it - go early!

( curiously, RS suggest going later in the afternoon to avoid crowds !)

We were at Versailles this past Friday. We followed Rick's advice and avoided going there Tuesday or Sunday. I would say that tourism has definitely come back. The main palace rooms were quite busy. But the gardens, Grand Trianon, Petit Trianon, and the Hamlet had much fewer people. Would highly recommend not skipping out on the Trianons and the hamlet. Can't imagine the main palace being even more crowded on Tuesdays or Sundays. Coming as early as possible (timed ticket) is important.

The fountains run on Tuesday (check that this is true now of course so much has changed). If so, definitely a good day to go and do the fountains in the morning while they are running, get lunch at one of the restaurants at the base of the gardens, then do the chateau in early afternoon and catch the late fountains again (you can re-enter the gardens on the same ticket all day (but the chateau only once)

Apparently, if you wait till late afternoon for some sites, you will miss the big bus tours.

what a helpful forum! Fountains are on Tue/Thus/Fri

So looks like we will purchase a Tuesday timed entry “passport” for 9 am.
