Searched this topic and most answers are over 8 years old, so looking for some current info. We are driving from Crestet to Avignon TGV station on July 11 2022 to catch a 7:16(am) TGV to Brussels. The Avis site says that they have a key drop box (I'm sure I'm not the first tourist to return a car before the office opens!!!). I pulled up the address on Google maps and I see some parking lots and fields but it isn't very clear on where the precise return location is located. For those who have done it, is returning a car to Avis at Avignon TGV station relatively straight forward? I tend to overthink things that are new to me, but I have dealt with Newark parking and rental returns. It can't be any worse than Newark, right??? Thanks in advance.
You can walk around the station with google street view, it seems like the rental car companies are located in small houses north of the station. https://goo.gl/maps/qKmrGHPRCdkuzUFK9
It’s outside, all on ground level, with one entry road that serves all the companies. You have clear signs to follow. Each company’s offices is located in a cabin-like structure next to the company’s designated parking area.
I can’t answer your question concerning car rental return at the Avignon TGV station but would advise you to photograph any dings, dents, scratches, etc. when you pick up the car and make sure that the photos are correctly digitally timed and dated. I would also do the same when I returned the car to show that no damage was done to the car while in your possession. We had a question when we returned our rental car (an Alpha Romeo Giulietta) in Bolzano and luckily we had photographic documentation that the scratch or ding (can’t remember which) existed when we picked up the car. Otherwise it might have been an expensive fix.
Thanks everybody, great information. We appreciate it..
Here’s a different piece of information you need to be aware of. A few years ago we had to return a car as you will be doing. There had been no option to prepay for the gas, so we allowed plenty of time to find a filling station. We were coming from a small town, not by autoroute. We could not find a station where our American cc’s would work, nor one that had a person present to handle the transaction. After 4 attempts at locations our gps sent us to, we were about to give up and eat the cost. However, the 5th time was the charm. The gps took us to a supermarket that also sold gas and had an attendant there. My advice is that unless you are driving on the autoroute, fill up the night before. Or maybe the self serve stations are now taking U.S. cc? 😖
Excellent advice!!
Is dropping the car off the night before an option? Spend the last night in Avignon.
It looks like the Avis office is open til 10PM
I second the idea of photographing everything. We rented in Nimes and they were VERY thorough when we returned the car. Not like the U.S. at all. Sorry, I don't know anything about the Avignon rental station. The station in Nimes was behind the train station and then you had a serpentine route to an underground parking garage to get/return the car.
First, try calling the rental office. An expense well paid. Also get very good directions about how and where to return, when we were taking our Avis car back to the Dijon train station we just couldn't find the Avis office even though we had been there a few days before. We finally saw some small signs that pointed us into the parking structure and voila, there were several spaces marked for rental car return.
Avignon TGV is a modern station in the outskirts with nothing else around it, so if you follow signs to "location de voitures" (car rental) you'll be good. Rented there a couple of times without any issue whatsoever. The same applies to Aix TGV, for others' reference.
