Avignon Wineries - need a car?

Hello! My husband and I are planning to visit Avignon for a 3 days in August. We really enjoy visiting wineries, but are not big fans of organized tours.

It’s looking like there aren’t many options for wineries without a car or a tour. Would y’all agree?

Also, what are some of your favorite nearby wineries?

What are doing on your other days if you don’t have a car? I can see spending one day visiting the sites in Avignon. Provence benefits from a rental car.

Planning to see Avignon, but now you’ve got me second guessing. We figured half a day for Avignon and kayaking, and one or two for wineries. The third is more flexible and is going to be determined by whether we have a car. Though, it seems you have answered the question on whether a car is worth it.

The Avignon tourist office is very helpful for the entire region, both in person and on-line

Years ago they steered me to a half-day bus tour north to Orange for the Roman ampitheatre and then past the Chateauneuf du Pape. The building is only a pile of rubble but the brand is world-famous. Plenty of wineries in that vicinity but not all welcome tourists.

I have researched the same thoughts. Thinking you can take a train to Sorgues, then Taxi, Uber, Hike to Châteauneuf-du-Pape? Is that an option. I agree a car is great, but some days, I will be partaking and do not want to drive.

Anyone know if you can take a taxi to the wine areas in Avignon to the wines ares? Rome to Rio ap says you can but that doesn't men you really can. Thoughts?

We did get lucky and were able to get a tour at Chateau de Beaucastel. We are really looking forward to that.

Another train trip we are looking at is Avignon to Arles, or Avignon to Orange.

The one driving trip I'm looking forward to is Avignon to Les Baux de Provence and St. Remy.

Look to get others thoughts.

Amfox28, great questions!

Take the train to Avignon.
Then take a rental car from the station.
Problem solved.
Any wine is fine.

Can't you just take a train to Sorgues and taxi to Chateauneuf? Like I said, I will have a car but drinking wine and driving don't mix.

I was very lucky to get a Beaucastel reservation, I hear they ae hard to get.

In general, a rental car is the best option for Provence. While things aren't far, there really aren't good options for getting around. The winemakers in the area are north of Avignon, a group of towns including Chateauneuf du Pape. I think either a car or a bus tour would be the only real options. It's maybe an hour, at most, to drive from Avignon to Chateauneuf du Pape, Orange is not far past that. I didn't drive directly between the two points. If there's an option for the theater in Orange and wineries, take it. The theater is the best preserved in Europe. It's very rare to have the structure behind the stage intact (I think the only other like it is in Tunis).

I will have a car, no drive while drinking, life rules to live by!

I did reach out to the Avignon Tourism with the question. Really a great reply. These folks are great. I highly recomend you reach out to them as well. http://www.avignon-tourisme.com

Hello Monsieur Thom
Further to your request, you can take a regional train from Avignon central train station either to Sorgues or Courthézon. To have the timeschedules and the rates, we invite you to contact or consult the website of the french railway company:

To reach the +33 (0)8.92.35.35.35 or the 36.35 in English, please wait a moment while a French voice introduces the different services until she gives the following message "for this service in English, press #85".
