Avignon to Lyon

Would love fellow travelers' impressions of driving versus sailing along the Rhone between Avignon and Lyon. We have never been to this part of France. We love beautiful scenery and nature that we can enjoy at a slow pace. We also enjoy touring interesting towns and good food. We have travelled through Europe by car, bus tour and rail, but wonder if a river cruises might be good for this itinerary. Water levels on the Rhone as well as Covid19 are considerations. Thanks!

Hello from Wisconsin,
Oh, I would drive and leave plenty of time for side trips. My only caveat, is be prepared for Lyon. It is a large city and you want to be able to get to where ever you plan to park the car.

They say it takes fewer than three hours to make the drive. But hours more to stop at every item that draws your attention.

The river scenery is not that special, many stretches have been channelled for hydropower. You can see most of it if you drive along the N7 or N86 highways. The non-TGV train is another option. Quite scenic in places. Stopping off in Tain l'Hermitage and/or Vienne for the night is worthwhile, by the way!

This is very helpful. I have never been on a river cruise, and it is tempting to let the river take us to each destination without packing up frequently. However, based on your recommendations, it seems I would be happier taking the train or driving. Thank you!
