Hello,
Looking at renting a car to go from Avignon to Gordes and Roussillion, unless there is an easy way to get there besides car. I am a bit worried to drive in another country, but if it isn't bad then I will do it. I know there are tours as well, but not sure if those would be as good as doing it yourself. So if you rented a car and give advice please let me know (especially the best company to go through and insurance in case - I do have AAA). But if you went with a tour and found it to be just as nice and not as stressful please let me know. Since we are based in Avignon, I think we would only need the car for a day as we plan to stay in Avignon and bike other places. I truly appreciate any advice!
Driving in the Luberon is super easy. It is two lane country roads and pretty well marked paths (compared to the rest of France) - even the villages are not that complex and parking is well marked outside of the centers . Just get a data plan for your smart phone, a good GPS in the car, or a standalone GPS device.. The only slightly stressful part will be getting in and out of Avignon, but that is easier than Aix, for example. I have not taken the tours out of Avignon for example, but in the Luberon there are little vistas, stops, less trafficked villages, vistas, etc that you may not have the freedom to try out on a tour..
