How easy is it to take local trains from Avignon, France to Bilbao, Spain? Will we get there in a day? Can we do it without reservations if we are using a Eurail pass?
The only way to make the whole train trip in one day is to depart Avignon Centre about 8:30, make 3 connections, and arrive at Bilbao 12 hours later, at 20:30. Seat reservations are required for all but the first leg to Nimes, and pass holders must reserve well ahead, even though these are not all the fastest TGV trains. The number of seats available is limited (and not sold at all in French stations within the last 3 days before the train departure).
How to Look Up Train Schedules and Routes Online gives you the DB train schedule link and tips for using it. It will show you which legs are "subject to compulsory reservation."
You do have the option of training to Marseille then flying to Bilbao using Vueling air.
With all connections it looks to be around a 7 hour trip.
I should have been more specific. We are actually hoping to "train" from Avignon to Irun. After a week in Irun we will travel to Bilbao for a night or two and then Madrid. We have a France/Spain Europass and we are hoping that the Europass will work for the majority of our travel. Will we be able to get to Irun by the evening if we are transferring trains from Avignon?
