Avignon to Aix-en-Provence - visiting towns in the Luberon

Hi All,

We will be picking up a rental car in Avignon for a couple of days and dropping it off when we arrive in Aix-en-Provence. We figured that we would string together a few towns in the Luberon while we are "on the way." Does anyone have any particular can't-miss/charming towns? Or a favorite way to string these gems together? If it makes a difference market-day-wise, we will be making the trek on a Friday (I think Bonnieux and Lourmarin have markets that day).

Thanks in advance!!

if I understand it correctly you will be driving through on one day or spending a couple of days in the general area? then the gordes area would be good. if you are at Gordes and/or Roussillon if time and interest permits we also found the nearby village of the bories very interesting to visit among many other fascinating places in the general area.
we enjoyed the market at L'Isle-sur-la-sorgue, beautiful.

this topic has been covered previously, so maybe do a search on previous topic?

hope this helps

Hi!

I'm sorry if it wasn't clear - we will be driving from Avignon to Aix-en-Provence on a Friday and we figured we would sightsee through the Luberon on the way. I was curious if anyone had suggestions for a scenic route through this area, and which towns to visit along the way. I've read Rick's chapter about this area, and while he groups the town by area, I can't really find a good suggestion for a drive-through in the book or online anywhere.

Thanks!

I drove around that area extensively a few years ago (stayed in Roussillon) and I just loved driving around and through several towns just deciding at the last minute if I wanted (or needed a break) to check it out more thoroughly. If I were to spend a whole day driving from Avignon to Aix I would probably start by going to L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue (no market on Friday but a great town), then to Gordes, Roussillon, Bonnieux, Lourmarin and then to Aix. The distances between them are each <an hour drive. Stop where it looks interesting and especially if there's a market. I loved Bonnieux myself. You could also stick in the Abbaye de Senanque and Joucas between Gordes and Roussillon.

It's hard to recommend without knowing your travel style. Some people want short drives then spend a lot of time in one or two towns. I don't mind driving all day and making short stops in several different towns - 1/2 hr here, an hour there, etc.

All the towns mentioned are amazing and quite different from one another, so any would be great.
I don't know when you are going, but if possible and during lavender season be sure to visit the Abbaye de Senanque...
