Avignon stay before Viking trip

We are flying into Marseille and will take the train to Avignon to stay a couple days before river trip in mid- September. Any recommendations for hotels near train station, or something exceptional nearby (cab ride etc.) for the experience? Also, we would like to hike and bike ride for the 2 days. Any ideas there for bike rentals and nearby scenery? Thank you!!!

Avignon is firmly rooted at the bottom of my European cities list, but it’s still a decent base for a day or two. Just know there’s not much to see IN Avignon. The Papal Palace is a bunch of empty rooms, and the bridge is a pricy ticket to walk out onto an incomplete bridge. You don’t need to devote sightseeing time to the place, instead focus on a few day trips.

Arles is an easy train ride away. I found it much more enjoyable, and the arena and Roman Museum are actual worthwhile attractions. Bonus if it’s a market day, Also, there’s a slough of minivan tours of Provence that you can take for a half or full day. These are a great way to see places like Pont du Garde and get a taste of Provence. I booked one at the TI for same day. That was some years ago, it’s probably easier to do online.

The train station is disconnected from the old town. You’ll want to stay somewhere within the old town walls, where the scant remains of Avignon’s charms survive. I don’t have recommendations. But Place de Corps Saints is a legit lovely square with some good cafes.
