We will be in Avignon in early September and will be renting a car for 2 days. With that small amount of driving time we want to go in one direction one day and another direction the next. Any suggestions on the best places to visit ?
For general-interest travelers, Rick's preferences are basically in the order that you find them listed under "At a Glance" at https://www.ricksteves.com/europe/france/provence. I'd say that his list emphasizes Roman history, but also aims for balance.
There are so many wonderful sites. Is Pont du Gard on your list? We found that fascinating, even though it was dreadfully hot that day. I would also recommend going to a village market. Since the markets are in different places on different days, that would dictate where you go that day. I visited the market in Bedoin and was amazed at all the wonderful colors, aromas, things for sale, and people.
Thank you for your suggestions. We haven't really put anything on our list yet but Pont du Gard seems like we should add it. The market in Bedoin is an option. I checked it is only open on Mondays and that is one of the 2 days that we will have the car.
I would base one day on visiting the Pont du Gard. You can just stop by and look at it or do as the locals do and hang out like a day at the beach. Either way it is amazing and worth your time. St. Remy is high on the list on this forum and our host gives recommendations for Nimes and Arles.
While they are all South and West of Avignon it would still fill up two days without a lot of driving.
Thanks Richard. I printed up your reply and will take it with me.
Day 1 - Pont du Gard, plus Nimes
Day 2 - St Remy or Les Baux, plus Arles
