Auvers-sur-Oise

We would like to visit Auvers-sur-Oise as a day trip from Paris on either Fri Oct 6, Sat Oct 7 or Sun Oct 8. What is the best train to take to Auvers-sur-Oise? Is it necessary to purchase a ticket to Van Gogh's home ahead of time?
Does anyone have a recommendation for lunch in Auvers?

Rick's Paris guidebook includes detailed train directions. You can either take a regular train from Paris Nord Banlieue section (should be tracks 30-36) just before 9:30 a.m. and take 45 minutes or take the regional metro/train RER C from any of several in-city stops and make a connection at Pontoise. None of the sightseeing needs advance ticket purchase.

VVG's "home" in Auvers was one windowless room where he committed suicide. I didn't feel particularly good about feeling his despair there - I got back to Paris as quickly as I could and went to the Musee d'Orsay to see his work again.

Auvers makes a great day trip but there is far more than the place where VG died. It wasn't his home but simply a room above the tavern/rest, now the l'Auberge Revoux which offers lovely lunches, a short film and an opportunity to see the room where he died. But, I'd suggest that you start at the Chateau which has a fun (albeit kitchy) introduction to the impressionists, then follow the paths which lead you to the sites where the paintings were actually done (they are signposted but I think you can also get a map in the Tourist Information Office), stop in the Auberge for lunch and to view the film/rooms, pay your respects at VGs and Theo's graves, visit the church VG painted, and check the Absinthe Musee and/or the Musee Daubigny. It's a wonderfully full day!

PS I seem to recall another restaurant near the railroad -- a long, low slung building not well marked that served wonderful food and was patronized by the locals. And - do google Auvers as the TI (which also has a short film) sometimes offers guided tours..
